Harvest Celebration roundup
Every year we like to hold a “harvest celebration” event for the customers and volunteers who make the farm possible. We’re trying to thread a very tricky needle in coming up with a way to make a small farm economically viable, and also deliver as much benefit as possible to the local community we serve. For us this kind of event is a critical expression of what we’re about: we’re passing on some of our surplus produce and energy to the people who help us get through tough times by supporting us in return. And, if everything goes right, it should be fun!
Which indeed it was, around 60 people showed up, of all ages. The children turned our pile of hay bales into a pile of straw. The adults consumed two huge pots of vegetable goulash (we make goulash every year in honour of grower Ernest Sumbo who is part hungarian). Hundreds of bottles of apple juice were produced and Darla’s flower patch was comprehensively raided as a way of wrapping up flower production for the year. It was a chance to talk with some of our regulars, as well as to connect with some new faces, and (via Dave’s farm tour) for some of our members to learn more about how the farm really operates.
This is a good opportunity for us to thank Dunbar and East Linton Area Partnership for their generous funding which allowed us to build a composting toilet on-site. This is invaluable to us in our community work as it allows us to hold events like this which are not possible without such facilities.
