Summer Pruning Workshop - 6th September
On Sun 6th Sep., from 1.30 – 4.30 pm, we will be running a hands-on workshop on summer pruning in the Belhaven Community Garden orchard. It’s suitable for anyone with some gardening experience who has some fruit trees in their garden or allotment patch. We will run through the principles of pruning and why you prune in the summer, distinguishing between tip-bearing and spur-fruiting apple varieties. Our focus will be on pear and apple trees, with some reference to plums. You will learn how to prune fruit trees to help the ripening process and maximise fruit production in the following year.
The workshop will include practical demonstrations and a chance to try out pruning yourself. If you have a pair of sharp bypass (not anvil) secateurs, please bring them along.
Places are limited so please book promptly to avoid disappointment. Ideally summer pruning is done in August but this was the first date available for the workshop!
It will be led by two experienced fruit growers, Naomi Barnes, Belhaven Community Garden and Daniel Wight, Tyninghame Organic Orchard. Numbers are restricted to 16 so please book promptly if keen.
Wear suitable clothing for outdoors (there is no shelter!), stout footwear, and bring a drink (unfortunately no mains water). If you have a pair, please bring sharp bypass (not anvil) secateurs.
We will gather at the picnic table in the Belhaven Community Garden field. The Garden is a short walk from the X7 and 120 bus routes (nearest stop being the Old Police Station). If driving best to park at back of the Cala estate on Bayview Circus road, near the entrance to the old hospital on Beveridge Row, and walk through the old hospital grounds.
